Frederick J. Karau

Frederick J. Karau

Albert Karau came to Blackfoot, Idaho, in the mid-1950s as a young German immigrant with little more than determination and hope. With encouragement from a friend and support from his uncle, he enrolled in the welding program at Idaho State College. That opportunity transformed his life, equipping him with the skills that led to a successful career in welding, American citizenship, and the ability to provide a stable future for his family.
Albert’s wife, Christine, also attended Idaho State, where she took language courses. Education became a family tradition: their son Albert (Bert) Jr. began his college education at ISU before later graduating from the University of Idaho, while their son Fred graduated from ISU in 1983 with a double major in History and Political Science.

Impact

In honor of their parents’ legacy, Fred, his wife Amy, and Bert have established the Albert and Christine Karau Scholarship. This endowed fund will provide support for students pursuing welding education in the College of Technology, with preference for those from Bingham County. By easing the financial burden of essential supplies and training, the scholarship continues the legacy of opportunity that began with Albert and Christine’s own education at Idaho State and extends across generations of the Karau family.
