Richard E. Schmunk

The Richard E. Schmunk scholarship fund for engineering students at ISU was established in 2004 by Patricia Roll Schmunk, his wife of 53 years. Richard “Dick” Schmunk grew up in a small town in Ohio, and then served in the Air Force in Germany as part of the post-war occupation airlift program. After his service, Dick enrolled in Miami University in Hamilton Ohio, where he met and married his wife Pat, who supported him as he earned his doctorate in solid state physics at Case Western. They moved to Idaho Falls, Idaho in 1959, where Dick worked in nuclear research positions with the Atomic Energy Commision, Idaho Nuclear Commision, Phillips Petroleum and E.G.G. Dick and Pat raised five children in Idaho and taught them the value of education. In his later years before retirement, Dick was an adjunct professor in the engineering department at ISU. Dick’s scholarship was established to support the community of engineering scholars at ISU.
