Richard Miner
RICHARD W. MINER
Richard Warren Miner was born December 3, 1922, to Ruth and Charles Warren Miner in Conneaut, Ohio. The younger of two boys, he grew up in the small Northeastern Ohio community during the depression years.
Following high school graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. He reached the rank of Staff Sergeant and served as a cryptographer in New Guinea and Australia. He was medically discharged in 1945.
Mr. Miner next pursued a college degree and was graduated from Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, magna cum laude.
Following a lifelong ambition, Mr. Miner began working at a local radio station in Ashtabula, Ohio. It was there that he met and married Joanne Leggett in 1946. His radio work eventually took him west to Carlsbad, Grants, and Gallup, New Mexico.
In 1963, he and his family settled in Pocatello, where he managed KWIK radio.
Always interested in higher education, Mr. Miner began his tenure at Idaho State University in 1965 as the High School Relations and Financial Aids Director.
In 1970, he received a Master’s degree in Student Personnel work from ISU. He was subsequently named Dean of Men and was serving as Associate Dean of Students until his retirement in 1983. Among his professional responsibilities was the coordination of the university scholarship program and foreign student advisor.
Mr. Miner was affiliated with Phi Beta Kappa, Phi Kappa Phi, and Phi Delta Kappa.
Mr. Miner was an active member of the Pocatello community and enjoyed reading, shop work, and woodworking.
Richard Miner died in July 1988, following a lengthy illness. His wife and three sons, Carey, Steven, and David all reside in Pocatello. His daughter, Ann, currently resides in Virginia. There are five grandchildren.
The scholarship endowment was established to recognize his affection for ISU and its students and assist individuals in pursuing their educational goals at ISU.
