*ROSE AINSWORTH PYRAH NURSING SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT * AT IDAHO STATE UNIVERSITY

Rose Arletta Ainsworth was born on February 24, 1881, at Sublett, Cassia County, Idaho, the daughter of Hannah Marie Hamson and Joseph Ainsworth, Jr. Shortly afterward, they moved and homesteaded near what is now Carey, Blaine County, Idaho. It was here that Rose grew up and received the limited education available to her. She was known as a good student.

One winter while Rose was a young girl, her right arm was injured when a toboggan upset while she and some friends were coasting down a hill. The injury developed complications. The result, after much pain and suffering, was her inability to bend her elbow.

She married Walter Pyrah in 1898 and they spent their lives farming at Carey. There were nine children born to this union. Rose’s handicap continued throughout her life, but did not prevent her from doing the physical things required in rearing a large family and doing work on the farm. She accomplished her daily work all without the modern conveniences that we are accustomed to expect now, which is no small consideration. This is an indication of the strong character and dedication she maintained for her family under adverse conditions.

Rose was a devoted mother bestowing much love and affection in caring for her family; encouraging them in developing their individual talents and aspirations; urging them to do their best, to be honest, truthful and morally upright in their endeavors in life. Both she and her husband were musically inclined, a talent which they passed on to their children.

During the last few years of her life, Rose suffered extreme pain and discomfort from angina pectoris. She passed away at Carey, October 19, 1940, at age 59, having been a life-long resident of the State of Idaho.
