Tara Young Faculty Legacy Theatre Endowment
Roy Miller, a prominent developer in Eastern Idaho and nationwide, has always harbored a deep love for music, particularly percussion. While his professional journey led him to success as a developer, retailer, and investor, Miller’s connection to music remained unwavering. He played drums and vibraphone with top jazz groups in the region, served as the pit drummer for numerous stage productions, and was an integral part of the Idaho State Civic Symphony for over 40 years. Tara Young, a distinguished educator and designer, holds a BA and MFA from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. At ISU, she has made significant contributions through her costume designs for major productions such as “Pippin,” “The Country Wife,” “Macbeth,” and "Antigone. ‘l Her extensive portfolio includes work with Theatre by the Sea, First Folio Shakespeare Festival, The Retro, McLeod Summer Playhouse, Chicago’s Field Museum, and Statesville Haunted Prison’s Haunted House. Tara Young’s impact extends beyond her design work. She is deeply involved in academic and professional development, recently presenting a workshop on costume design for dance productions at the United States Institute for Theatre Technology (USITT) conference and stage expo. This prestigious event attracts over 2,500 college students and 175 exhibitors, providing a platform for students to advance their skills and network with industry professionals. In addition to her role as a designer, Professor Young teaches courses in costume construction, pattern drafting, costume history, and stage makeup, and has served as the Director of Undergraduate Studies for the past two years.
Suzanne L. and Roy F. Miller, Jr. Scholarship Endowment
Roy Miller is a prominent developer in Eastern Idaho and throughout the country. While his first passion has always been music, specifically percussion, he focused his academic studies in other areas and during his career became a successful developer, retailer, and investor, but was always connected to music. He played drums and vibraphone with the best jazz groups in the region, was the pit drummer for numerous stage productions, was a member of the Idaho State Civic Symphony for over 40 years, tympanist for the Pocatello Municipal Band for 62 years, and for 12 years, the principal percussionist and tympanist in the Idaho Falls Symphony. He and Suzanne were supporters of the Idaho State Civic Symphony, Idaho Falls Symphony, Spokane Symphony where his nephew is associate concertmaster, the Grand Teton summer symphony program, and the Utah Festival Opera series in Logan, Utah.
He and Suzanne married in 1994 and spent many enjoyable years traveling around the world and enjoying music and the arts. Prior to Sue’s passing in 2023, she had a career as an elementary school educator, then, in retirement, a volunteer ombudsman visiting nursing homes and assisted living centers throughout southeastern Idaho, advocating for the needs of elderly residents.

Recognizing the importance of fostering the arts, Roy Miller has chosen to create a faculty legacy endowment in honor of Tara Young, the Chair of the Department of Theatre & Dance and a Professor of Theatre specializing in Costume Design at ISU. Roy Miller’s decision to establish a faculty legacy endowment for Tara Young is a reflection of his profound respect for her work and his enduring passion for the arts. This endowment will ensure that Tara
Young can continue to inspire and educate future generations of theatre and dance students at ISU. Through this generous contribution, Roy Miller’s legacy will live on, fostering a vibrant artistic community and supporting the growth and development of talented individuals who share his love for music and the performing arts.
Suzanne L. and Roy F. Miller, Jr. Scholarship Endowment
As a tribute to their wonderful life and the joyous experiences they shared together, Roy established this scholarship using funds he and Suzanne had designated for continued travel. They were both passionate about music and supporting students at ISU, and this scholarship will ensure that students will be able to pursue their passions as well.
