USA Boxing Foundation - Thomas "Sarge" Johnson Scholarship
In the 1970s, Thomas L. “Sarge” Johnson became one of the United States’ most influential amateur boxing coaches. After a distinguished career in the U.S. Army, Johnson served as an assistant coach for the 1976 US Olympic Boxing team. With gold medalists “Sugar” Ray Leonard, Leon and Michael Spinks among his list of pupils, Johnson was later appointed national coach. In March 1980, Johnson and all 21 members of the U.S National Boxing team were killed in an airplane crash near Warsaw, Poland. The Thomas “Sarge” Johnson scholarship provides amateur boxers an ability to apply the skills learned in in the sport to post-secondary education in “Sarge” and the team’s memory.
